Preferably cheap, it's only going in the Ranger. I can afford about $50, any suggestions?

Hit up the junk yard and take one from another Ranger or B2000.

+1. My 89 Yota has no tach and 5 speed and it's the vehicle I'm the most comfortable driving.
Edit: for OP: go junkyard diving. Lots of aftermarket tachs

I used to have a little 2.5" Equus tach that I transferred to and from various shitboxes for years. Being smaller, it fit nicely on top of each car's steering column and didn't obscure the existing gauges. I think it was $25 from Canadian Tire.

I would, but then I would lose the voltmeter, oil pressure, and temp gauge. With the stock tach they are all replaced by idiot lights.

Not so much at the local u-pull-it. People raid that shit like no one's buisness.

I am used to driving without one, but would like to have one so I can see revs to help with economy.

You have to be persistent and diligent. Frequently check updated inventory for likely carriers. Like a civic dx

If you want to just try out having a tach and you have a smartphone, check out the torque app plus this: http://www.amazon.com/ELM327-Bluetoo… . It has a tach amongst a variety of other sensors and you're only out 16 bucks or so.

Summit has Sun Tachs for less than that. I have one in my F150.
